Terroir: the rumours of its death have been greatly exaggerated

There’s a very interesting article on Jancis Robinson.com today, in which she reports on a recent Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW) seminar on mineralogy. It deals with some very interesting issues. In her piece, she reports on Maltman’s talk, but I think she jumps to too-hasty a conclusion about its implications. As geologist Alex Maltman explained forcefully, in a reasoned, well-illustrated talk, there can be no direct link between what is below the surface of a vineyard and the flavours found in the resulting wine. This despite the fact that soil type has long been held to be one of the fundaments of the sacred notion …

Wine Legend: Hugel, Riesling Selection de Grains Nobles, Alsace, France 1976

The latter is produced solely from grapes affected by noble rot and with a potential alcohol of 15.2%, although in practice the sugar levels are considerably higher. The 1976 vintage proved ideal for these styles, and the Hugels produced quite substantial quantities of them, from Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer as well as Riesling, and made them commercially available…

Hopkins Vineyard event manager Patty Baillargeon talks about wine at a recent tasting.

Pairing Wine with Indian Cuisine

Image Chicken-Vindaloo-Manitoba-Robyn-Hanson-770x513.jpgIndian cuisine tends to be intensely flavored and heavily spiced. Dishes are usually complemented by an array of curries, chutneys, and sauces, which create an even more complex flavor profile. Since it’s so complex, Indian cuisine begs for a beverage with simplicity in order to balance out the overall tasting experience. This is the main principle behind pairing wine with Indian cuisine. Wines with simple, well-defined flavors are able to create balance with complex Indian cuisine. Here are the considerations to have in mind when selecting a wine: What is the sauce? How spicy is the dish? Pairing Wine with Indian Cuisine Top…
