DC84 – Viano, Cabernet Sauvignon – Cal-Ital Cab from Contra Costa County |

It was International Cabernet Sauvignon Day last Thursday ? but it was a white week here at DC, so we’re catching up now. In more ways than one: we’ve only featured one Cab Sauv before, and we’ve never had a wine from California! This week we remedy both omissions with this pure Cabernet from one of the oldest family-owned wineries in the Golden State.

The Viano clan arrived from Piedmont a century ago, settling in Contra Costa County, the “opposite shore” of San Francisco Bay. Combining sun-baked fruit with the earthy complexity of good mature claret, their classy Cabernet is remarkably restrained by Californian standards, both in its 13% alcohol and its modest price-tag.
